Early development consisted of vacation homes for tourists and retirees.
Martha McConnell: “A lot of the people that came up thought they were really roughing it, you know… one person said they just felt like they were way away from civilization when they were on the lake…. There were very few nice homes. It was more just weekend homes where you had a roof over your head.”
As Atlanta expanded north, the areas surrounding Lake Lanier became bedroom communities with subdivisions full of permanent residences.
